NEMUG Executive Board Articles for September, 1997 Internet Security, Viruses and Firewalls Our July meeting featured guest speakers Rick Hansen from Desktop Data, Inc. and Vladimir Grinmen and Stanley Weinronk who are web developers from Boston University. Rick gave a wonderful presentation on Security on the Internet. Topics covered included Architectural problems (TCP/IP was not designed to be secure). Items to worry about are viruses, unauthorized access, how to protect data integrity and availability and guarding against corporate espionage. Preventative measures start with having a company security policy and include users being careful with passwords and activities, application design, anti-virus software, firewalls, encryption, user authentication. This project began back in 1996 when a proof of concept of a secure system was mandated before the project was accepted. After many months of meetings the concept was accepted and is now in use by Facility, Students and Alumni. Respectfully Submitted by Linda Coles Members Sound Off ...

Besides working in the field of M, this husband and wife are the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the MDC. Also Ed has recently published a book on M. Check out the news section for more information about this authoritative publication. In the first of our two part discussion, they tell us how the MDC came into being, who stands behind the MDC and talk about standards. What is the MDC? When was it set up and why? In the mid-sixties, in one of the laboratories at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a programming language was developed that was nick-named "MUMPS". It didn't take long before this "neat little lab-system" became quite popular and a number of people started to create their own implementations that worked on the type of computer that they had. Today, there are only a couple of main types of CPUs left, but in those days, there was no compatibility whatsoever between the various CPU boards (" names that I remember from these days are PDP7, PDP8, PDP9, DEC10, PDP11, Varian, HP, Philips-800, and I'm sure that many more names can be added to this list

It has extensive string handling making it suitable for databases with vast amounts of free text. MUMPS has unique features including the ability to store both data and program statements in its database. In addition, formulas written in a program can be stored and used by other programs. Developed in 1966 at Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass. Utility Multi-Programming System), it has been used extensively in health care.
